Now live! Public, free – MusicBrainz-Mirror.eu

This is a freshly setup mirror for http://musicbrainz.org based on the MusicBrainz VM.

I have been using the MusicBrainz Webservice in one of my project for years and was sick and tired of the rate limitations I hit on the official server. Now that the MusicBrainz VM is finally running on my own system, there are a lot of spare resources that I would like to give to the public.

To access the actual server you can use http://musicbrainz-mirror.eu:5000.

Please be aware that it is still in a testing stage. If you use this server, you will have to expect random downtimes, slow responses and unpredictable errors. Be warned!

Ifย the demand is too high, I might be ableย to added additional resources. Let’s see how it turns out.

If you already want to give a thanks, do not hesitate to show your appriciation withย a little donation. ๐Ÿ™‚

Cheers

Tobias

  1. Thanks! Did some tests and it’s really fast. May I ask you what guid you used to setup this? The one from the official MB website or the one from Headphones at github?

  2. Tobias,

Thanks for setting this up. Works like a charm, but I’ve been having a ton of trouble keeping my vm mirror running well. Any chance I could get you to package up your working VM (without the DBs via dropDB) and shoot me a download link? I’ve got plenty of dropbox/OneDrive/Mega space for you to upload to if that’s an issue.

    1. Hi. I will see if I can get a copy done next weekend. It would be way cooler to have a fresh one build from someone with a little more skills though.

  3. Thanks so much! I don’t use MB much and the only mirror I could previously find seems to be down now. Glad I found this. Cheers.

  4. Hi!

First of all thanks for the mirror! Very usefull!

Btw it seems that the database does not get reindexed.
As an example, i was using a indexed search and the correct result was no showing, but if i used a direct database search, the correct result shows up. And it is as is for days, i don’t know how often the database get reindexed, but i think it should have been so far.

    Any ideas?

    Bests.

    1. Hi Kri5.

The only way I found to keep the index up to date is to do a full reindex. This task takes about 4 hours to complete and the search is not reachable for that time. I currently just trigger it manually from time to time. Let me know if anyone has got a better solution.

I startet the reindex a minute ago.

      Cheers,

      Tobias

      1. I don’t know much about maitaining a MB mirror, but as you mirror is supposed to be a eu mirror, why not schedule a downtime once a week during night to do a full reindex using a cron job?

Maybe (probably) others have a better idea!

  5. I just forked over a small donation as a “thank you”. Every once in awhile I think about tackling this and setting up my own private mirror but then I try to follow the instructions, get lost, and thank the stars that you’re providing this one.

    1. Thank you Steven!

For some reason it truly is a pain to setup the VM and keep it running. I am on my second attempt to do the musicbrainz shema update from last month. First try took me about 5 hours and messed up everything … ๐Ÿ™
Got a six pack from your donation for today ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Yes, I knew that. ๐Ÿ™‚ I spent roughly 20 hours trying to get the new schema up & running and failed.

Now I finally had the time to put up the new VM with replication working again. Everything seems very stable.

      Sorry for the long wait.

      Cheers

  6. Hi Tobias,

    Great initiative!

Tried your server out. When visiting http://musicbrainz-mirror.eu:5000 I see the page. And when I search it on the website it work. However when searching through headphones I get “No results” no matter what I search for.

I have set up your server with the correct port in settings (and no username/password ).

The log only says “Attempt to query MusicBrainz for bob dylan failed (caused by: )”

So no cause. Any idea how to fix this?

    1. Hi Anders!

I actually have not used headphones yet and no idea how it communicates with the mb servers.
Does it work with the official server? Maybe there are proxy issues? Maybe some hidden characters in the username/password fields?

The headphones forums are probably a better place to get your problems solved. ๐Ÿ™‚

If you find that it fails because of musicbrainz-mirror, I’ll be glad to get that sorted out.

      1. Hi Tobias,

Thank you for your altruistic server. Your work is really appreciated.

Regarding the use of Headphones, I managed to get it to work simply entering your server details as follows:

        Host: musicbrainz-mirror.eu
        Port: 5000

Note that in the host field for the Headphones settings there is no “http://”. Adding the host as http://musicbrainz-mirror.eu results in connection failure. Just in case anyone else had the same issue.

        Regards.
